Volunteers:

Before going to a disaster area, join an established volunteer organization. Communities can become easily overwhelmed by the amount of generous people who want to help immediately after a disaster. Contacting and joining an established organization will help to ensure that you are appropriately trained to respond in the most effective way. Be patient: recovery lasts a lot longer than the media attention, and there will be volunteer needs for many months. The Corporation for National and Community Service can help you find volunteer opportunities at Serve.gov.

United Way: If you wish to become a Storm Sandy recovery and rebuilding volunteer here in our area, contact Tara Maffei for more information on Disaster Volunteering in the shore area attmaffei@uwmonmouth.org or (732) 938-5988.

New Jersey Medical Reserve Corps: The citizens of New Jersey need your help. The New Jersey Department of Health recognizes that, in the event of a public health emergency, volunteers are our most valuable resource. New Jersey has made great strides in creating the plans and infrastructure necessary to prepare for and respond to a public health emergency. Contact Michele Menditto for more information atmichele.menditto@co.monmouth.nj.us or (732) 431-7456 Ext. 8680.

Red Cross: The Red Cross continues to focus on reaching as many people as possible who need our help. Your help is urgently needed to continue to support relief efforts. Getting supplies and meals and water into affected areas is the top priority. Find out more about current Volunteer Opportunities here, or contact your volunteer specialist, Maureen Buehl at (732) 493-9100 x 1241 or maureen.buehl@redcross.org.
