Student Resource Officer

Description:

The School Resource Officer program is a nationally accepted program involving the placement of law enforcement officers within the educational environment. This program was established as a delinquency intervention approach.

Goals and Objectives:

  • Develop a rapport with students, parents, and school personnel

  • Provide classroom D. A. R. E. intervention

  • Strengthen safety measures on school grounds

  • Present information on various crime prevention and safety topics

  • Provide law enforcement resource assistance

  • Identify and counsel problem youth

  • Divert problem youth from the juvenile justice system

Additionally the SRO will:

  • Investigate reported crimes on school grounds

  • Apprehend those who break the law

  • Provide information on laws and ordinances

Through these activities:

  • Help students, parents and educators to develop a better understanding of the role of a law enforcement officer

  • Create a more positive understanding of the legal and judicial system

Note: SRO counseling is intended primarily for students who are having some minor problems at school or at home and is intended to supplement, not supplant, the existing school resources in this area. In addition to counseling and referral services, the SRO provides additional resource assistance to students, parents, and school staff.
