Autism Awareness Training Conducted

The Wall Township Police Officers, Communication Officers and Emergency Medical Technicians recently received autism awareness training during the months of March and April.  The instructor for this training was Fran Hines, a part-time autism outreach coordinator for the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.  Hines is also an autism awareness trainer with the New Jersey Department of Health and a parent of an autistic child.

During this training, Hines instructed the Wall Township Emergency Responders how to understand the special problems associated with effectively assisting individuals with autism.  Hines explained how to they can prepare themselves when dealing with individuals with autism.  He also instructed emergency responders on signs that individuals with autism may exhibit to assist them in identifying persons with autism.  Hines expressed to all of the emergency responders and communication officers the importance of patience and understanding when dealing with individuals with autism.
